It's an amazing world, and sometimes there are strange and wonderful landscapes right at our feet and fingertips if we just take the time to look.
When I think about it, macro photography pairs really nicely with my interest in huge, wide landscape photos. It's a challenge to come across some amazing natural scene - big or small - and then try to figure out some way to squeeze a little of that inspiration into the tiny confines of a photograph.

I really enjoy the odd contradiction that looking really close brings - in a lot of ways, the closer and clearer we can see something, the more abstract it becomes.

Most of the photos I take are in and around New Mexico, my adopted home state. With a rich cultural heritage that spans from prehistory to the nuclear age, there's plenty to see and do.

Some of my interests include Anasazi historical sites like Bandelier National Monument, historical pueblo sites like Pecos, Route 66 stuff, and Spanish or Mexican historical sites like El Rancho De Las Golondrinas. And Santa Fe itself is a charming town to just walk around and take in; it provides a sense of history that few other places in the U.S. offer.

natural and landscape

My adopted home state of New Mexico provides endless opportunities to get out and explore and enjoy nature. In Santa Fe, the elevation of almost 7,000 feet allows for dramatic cloud structures, striking blue skies and vast views. The rough high desert climate is far more diverse that you might expect, and the geographical variety that comes from living on the Continental Divide provides new wonders around every corner.

sunrises, sunsets and lightning

One of the big perks of living in New Mexico is the amazing sunsets we get throughout the year. Most of the time, I just enjoy them while I'm cooking outside or watching my daughter swing, but I also really enjoy learning about how to photograph them.

It's very challenging, and unlike a photograph of, say, a person, where the challenge is to make the person look very much like themselves, an image of a sunset may not look anything like the sunset you actually saw.

HDR techniques have opened up some possibilities, and some of these images take advantage of it. (HDR is a technique where you take several photos of the same scene and combine them later to create images that would be difficult or impossible to capture with a single exposure.) My favorite sunset shots are ones where it's not totally obvious if it's HDR or not - if it's not totally clear, I feel like I've done it right.

I enjoy the improvisational element that goes along with macro photography. Often I'll just walk around the house, maybe sneak into my daughter's room, and sit down with a handful of small toys or rocks or beads that happened to catch my eye.

Whether I'm working on macro photography or just spot an interesting architectural angle or colorful bit of lichen or rugged piece of wood, I'm always amazed at the remarkable beauty that can be found just by stopping and taking a moment to look.
